High stakes
As part of the energy transition, hydrogen is becoming a solution envisaged by the maritime sector in order to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
The sector is considered extremely polluting because the heavy fuel oil used emits 3,500 times more sulfur (SOx) than road vehicle fuel.
This heavy fuel oil also emits significant quantities of CO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOx) which generate the formation of fine and ultra-fine particles.

Multiple uses
Many “demonstrator” projects are being developed in the maritime sector because the uses are multiple.
Indeed, it is not only ships, boats, ferries or tugboats that can benefit from hydrogen applications. Most of the need is at the dock with:
- The electrification of ships at the dock
- Local hydrogen production/distribution
- Vehicles at the dock: handling equipment, forklifts, port tractors, etc.
- Port handling cranes
- etc.
